10th-Apr-2009 12:12 pm - Geek.Kon Shifting Into High Gear!
What Cosplayers
Greetings all!

This is your friendly neighborhood Geek.Kon staffer here with an update.

We're shifting into high gear, on the staff, and the next step is all about you, the convention-goers. We've got a whole lot to update you on, so let's dive right in!

First of all, we're happy to announce that both mail-in and online pre-registration is up and running. Cost of pre-registration is only $20 for the whole weekend!

Second, in case anyone missed it, our forums were down for a time due to a massive technical glitch with our host server. The forums have been back for several months, though, and are still the awesome web-hangout of fun they have always been. Unfortunately, the database of users was lost, so you'll have to sign up for them again. But the process is completely painless. We promise! Head on over and join in the discussions of all the geekiness that will be occurring in Madison in October.

Third, we are now taking submissions for panelists. In the past, Geek.Kon has been able to boast some of the best panels in the midwest convention circuit and it's all due to the awesome that are the volunteer panelists. So, if you have that hit panel you always do or if you want to do one, stop by the website and fill out the easy form. We need your awesome!

Fourth, Geek.Kon is happy to announce our very first community outreach endeavor; Save Vs. Hunger! We have partnered with Second Harvest to organize a donation drive for non-perishable food items. Bring a food item with you to the convention to donate and receive a raffle ticket for a one-of-a-kind, giant, plushie d20, custom-made by yours-truly! The more food items you bring, the more raffle tickets you earn!

Fifth, we have a lot more vendor space this year! If you are interested in being a vendor at Geek.Kon.09, information can be found on the website. We have plenty of space, even for multiple tables!

Sixth (see, the list keeps going on and on!), we delighted to have the Madison Area Costuming Society back with us again to run a series of panels on costuming. Their panels last year were some of the best-attended at the convention and they've certainly contributed to Geek.Kon's costuming reputation! Between their panels and the Masquerade, Geek.Kon is the convention for the avid costumer in the midwest!

And finally, for all you steampunk enthusiasts, we're happy to announce the return of Steam Century! The interactive mystery group will once again be holding a two-day adventure at Geek.Kon and reports are that it's going to be a nail-biter! The easy-to-play format is great for avid followers of their story line and the uninitiated alike, which makes them a fantastic addition to Geek.Kon! You can visit their website at www.hmabadger.com to learn more and follow their story line for the 2009 season!

The Geek.Kon.09 staff is certainly getting busy, now, preparing to bring you the best convention for all things Geek that the midwest has to offer. Join us in Madison October 23rd to 25th. Why? Because, as this year's theme says...

You Geek Is Showing!
28th-Sep-2008 09:04 pm - Geek.Kon 2: Electric Boogaloo
Default Hadoriel
Well, what with everything that happened in the last month before the convention, I gotta say, I was really nervous about this year's Geek.Kon We had a lot of communications problems and stumbled over a number of new (at least, to us) regulations from the UW. And yet, things went remarkably smoothly this weekend.

I'll give a more complete run-down of everything I got to do later, when I'm more coherent. But for right now, I want to publicly give kudos to some folks.

First, the staff, especially Bob-san, Ninja, Romeo_moon, Madawc, and Rabbi, all of whom were running around like crazy people all weekend and who also in some fashion made certain I didn't kill myself working. Someone, somewhere along the line, also bought some ice packs, one of which became the thing that saved my foot when I got to the point Sunday evening that I could no longer walk without whimpering.

Second, the wonderful folks from Division #1428 of Dr. Steel's Army of Toy Soldiers, who did a ton of volunteer work. I can't say enough good things about the hard work they did. Whenever a volunteer was needed, at least four people in Toy Soldier uniforms put their hands up without question. They are well-deserving of the first-ever Geek.Kon Kick-Assery Award.

Third, everyone in macscostume. We had a fantastic track of panels this year and had a great masquerade. Glowing praise was received for all the panels and Geek.Kon has definitely been put on the map as a costumer's convention.

And last but certainly not least, everyone on the cast and crew of steam_century. The mystery was the hit of the convention and even people who weren't playing the game got a big kick out of it. Steam Century will always have a home at Geek.Kon.
26th-Sep-2008 12:27 pm - Help! Looking for panelists...
Munsch, The Scream, Stress
OK, this is beyond super-last-minute, but I have not found any panelists for my panel on "Science Fiction and Science Fact".

The blurb in the booklet reads:

SF has generated lots of ideas for technology, from computers and robots to warp drives and teleportation.  We will talk about what current physics says we can and can't do - and what we might be able to do someday...

The panel is scheduled for 11-12 on Saturday morning.  Yes, I just found out from the booklet that this conflicts with Dr Horrible, so who knows, maybe nobody will even come... But just in case, I'd like to have an actual panel, meaning at least two people, I guess.

If you know anyone who might possibly be interested in helping with this panel,or have any suggestions on where to look, I'd be grateful if you could send them my way or let me know.

Hey, guys.

I noticed that http://geekkon.net was updated yesterday, with a link to the PDF file of the program booklet. So if you're like me, and enjoy using highlighters to color-coordinate your convention experience, you should totally check it out!

There's also a nice spot on Felicia Day, who will be doing a video conference during The Guild panel.

Geek.Kon is tomorrow!

Panelists & Volunteers
We are in need of more volunteers and people who would like to run panels!

Please note, the sign-up form for RPG's is up on the site. We're also looking for people to run games, especially DM's (Dungeon Masters). Sign-up will also be available day-of, but it might be wiser to beat the crowds.

DDR/Guitar Hero/Rock Band!
We are currently ironing out the rules page for the DDR/GH/RB tourneys. Sign-up will most likely be day-of. If anyone has any extra equipment/controllers they would like to lend us, it would be appreciated. This is especially true for Rock Band controllers. Please contact the Con-Chairs.

Video Gaming!
We are currently looking for people willing to run tourneys and with games/equipment they'd be willing to lend for the weekend. Please contact our Video Gaming Coordinator
or the Con-Chairs.

Now you can help insure a Geek.Kon for 2009 by donating at our website!
